The CE stands for “Continuing Education” to indicate that this program is designed for professionals who already have their dental diplomas. This change brings added clarity and credibility for our graduates worldwide and reflects the full academic and clinical depth of our curriculum.

From Master Professional to Master of Science (M.Sc.)

When we first unveiled the newly upgraded version of the program, we introduced it under the title Master Professional Lasers in Dentistry. The intent was clear: signal this as a postgraduate professional degree, not to be confused with a consecutive M.Sc. aimed at undergraduate students or holders of a B.Sc.

That change worked well inside Europe, but as we connected with professionals across the globe, one thing became clear: the Master of Science (Continuing Education) – or in short M.Sc. (CE) – degree carries more international recognition. Whether you’re applying for positions, licenses, or credentials outside the EU, “M.Sc. (CE)” is universally understood.

So, we listened, we adapted, and we’re excited to announce: our upgraded program will now again grant the degree M.Sc. (CE) in Lasers in Dentistry.

What Stays the Same: All the Upgrades We Developed

• Flexible format for working professionals: modules grouped into compact teaching blocks to reduce travel, with additional virtual learning to cut time away from your clinic.

• Boot camp in Cairo: gain intensive clinical laser experience through our partner university MIU in Egypt, with full patient treatments under expert guidance.
• Future-focused curriculum: from periimplantitis and pediatric laser dentistry to facial aesthetics, root canal innovations, and photobiomodulation, a field with great potential and non-invasive treatments.

University Mastership Advanced Module Courses

• Benefit from Certified Education in Lasers in Dentistry

In standard academic studies in dentistry, dentists do not get to learn about dental laser technology and treatment concepts. Building onto a university degree in dentistry, the necessary professional knowledge for laser applications in dental practice is taught at the highest academic level in theoretical lectures and practical teaching for two selected wavelength areas – dental Erbium lasers and dental diode lasers.

Relevant theories and application options (such as with each Module Course below) pertaining to laser use in dentistry, are taught for those wavelengths. Participants obtain sound theoretical knowledge in lectures and seminars led by renowned, competent and experienced international scientists and practitioners. Skills training sessions, exercises, practical applications, and live operations guide participants towards using lasers successfully and professionally.

Laser Safety Officer Course [LSO] 

1 Day, 1 ECT

Prerequisite / Foundational course before any module

You only need to do LSO once and your credits will be recorded, should you want to do additional modules thereafter, with no time limit.

2 Days, 2 ECTS

Complete one, or two or three or all. By completing at least 3, you qualify for the Mastership Exam in Vienna, Austria. No time limit.

If you complete LSO and follow it up with any 3 Mastership Module Courses, you will qualify for the final examination module at Vienna’s Sigmund Freud University, where you will enjoy a recap lecture day with Dr Rene Franzen, present your 5 clinical cases and complete the written exam to graduate with a Mastership in Laser Dentistry.

This flexible structure is ideal for Specialists or Dentists wanting to dive deeper into lasers in certain treatment areas only.

In 2024, the 19th ISLD Congress will take place in Porto, Portugal. This educational meeting will include lectures, seminars, teaching courses, research symposiums and interactive sessions with case discussions in laser dentistry research, basic science and, above all, patient care. We expect participants from all over the world.

On the first day, on the 6th of June 2024, we will also meet for the 10th WALED conference here. WALED is the alumni organization of AALZ, the Aachen Dental Laser Center.

The Master’s program in Lasers in Dentistry is an application-oriented continuing education program, whereby great importance is also attached to the teaching of scientific fundamentals.

The program offers dentists the opportunity to specialize in the field of laser dentistry. It promotes analytical, constructive and creative problem-solving skills in practice on the basis of a reasonably broad technical knowledge that is deepened in selected areas.

The main objectives of the program are to provide participants with scientific skills and to enable them to take up a qualified position in the dental community. Qualifications that students acquire in the course of their studies are in particular:

• An understanding of the different optical models for the classification of light
• Knowledge of the physical principles as well as the technical implementation of a laser system
• Knowledge of dental principles in the application of laser systems with specific wavelengths
• Competent and professional patient counseling in all areas of lasers and laser-assisted therapies
• Critical evaluation ability of scientific knowledge in the field of dentistry
• The ability to use dental laser systems in a clinically correct manner:
  • The safe and ethical use of lasers
  • The clinically indicated use of lasers, taking into account the indications and contra-indications for the given wavelengths.
  • The supportive or independent role of lasers in therapy
• Recognized therapy plans and treatment protocols

With the supervision by qualified scientific staff, students are introduced to the successful and professional application of lasers in their practice. The degree enables an innovative step in the interdisciplinary linking of life science, medicine and natural sciences. The interdisciplinary cooperation also offers the possibility of linking research and teaching between the fields of dentistry and physics at the highest level of quality.

After 18 years of offering the Master program Lasers in Dentistry in Aachen, including several improvements in those years, we are very excited to announce the next big upgrade to our Master. We are shifting our educational center from RWTH Aachen University, where the late Professor Dr. Norbert Gutknecht originally established the program, to SFU Sigmund Freud University in Vienna, Austria. After its internal release at SFU we will start on 3rd October 2022 with the next intake into Lasers in Dentistry. The major upgrade includes:

• The new Master will be a Master Professional, not a Master of Science, which may have been easy to confuse with a consecutive M.Sc. as opposed to a postgraduate degree. The Master Professional degree makes the new Master easier to identify clearly as a postgraduate degree for a professional. 
• We upgraded the Master Professional to a full 120 ECTS credit points, over the 60 credit points in the old program. This will also improve recognition in countries outside the European Union as 120 ECTS is normally considered a full-time study.
• Major improvements involve the studyability of the program. Opposed to the old program, we now focus even more on clinical activity and the time you spend treating your patients in your own office with lasers and taught treatment protocols are counted towards your study time. We keep the program aimed at practicing professionals who study the Master beside their daily duties.
• To ensure studyability and as little time taking out of your dental work as possible, we combine the presence phase of modules in teaching blocks to minimize travel time and costs when coming to SFU, Vienna.
• The program is supported by state-of-the-art E-Learning and some shorter modules and seminars are conducted via a virtual classroom, eliminating the need to travel for these modules completely.
• Practical parts will be conducted in improved, modern facilities at SFU and are support by a wide range of modern dental laser systems from different manufacturers. You will „test drive“ them all, supporting you in your decision process when you want to expand your dental laser equipment. 
• For those who are not yet established in their own dental offices, we offer support and guidance in the form of an excursion module to our partner university, MIU Misr International University in Cairo, Egypt. Here you can „boot camp“ into laser treatments all day long and learn from doctors who have been trained by us and are close co-workers since many years. Under their guidance you will treat patients yourself. This excursion is of course also available for those participants who do have their own offices.
• The new updated curriculum focusses on the most recent challenges in modern dentistry, covering topics from periimplantitis, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, pain therapy and photobiomodulation, facial aesthetics and smile design, blood-less surgeries, root canal treatments, periodontal state-of-the-art treatment concepts among others.
• We now give more time for the master thesis, a common struggle in the old program. We also give more time to study for the exams, removing a major stress factor from the old structure.
• We intensively evaluated feedback from our past graduates and adopted the new improved curriculum on this valuable information. Now the program consists of 19 modules, which are more distinct and focused than the old module structure. In total, approximately 52 days you will be in Vienna to complete the full program and achieve your degree as Master Professional Lasers in Dentistry.
